This dataset contains estimates of the prevalence of visual acuity loss and visual acuity blindness in the United States in 2017. These estimates are created using a Bayesian meta-analytic modeling approach that combines information from multiple, disparate data sources to produce comprehensive predictions of prevalence by age, race, sex and geography. The vision loss prevalence estimates represent best-corrected visual acuity in the better-seeing eye. 'Any vision loss' represents any impairment or blindness of 20/40 or worse; 'US-defined blindness' refers to the subset of vision loss that is 20/200 or worse; 'Visual impairment' refers to the subset with visual acuity of 20/40 to <20/200.
Data sources include the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (reference values), the American Community Survey, the National Survey of Childrens Health, and published examination study results from the Baltimore Pediatric Eye Disease Study, the Chinese American Eye Study, the Eye Diseases Prevalence Research Group, the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Cohort.
