LA Counts provides access to 2,000+ open and publicly accessible datasets related to Los Angeles County. Sourced from over 200 publishers, the majority are maintained by government agencies but datasets from nonprofit and private publishers are listed, too. Metadata completion varies widely across and even within publishers. LA Counts has developed minimum metadata field requirements to kickstart the adoption of a standard level, set user expectations, and encourage publisher accountability.
In general, datasets conform to the three criteria:
- Open | Nearly all the datasets are open and publicly accessible; however, some are restricted for legal or ethical reasons, e.g. the California State Attorney General's CalGang database.
- Machine-readable | Direct access to the original source data is profided; however, some entries link to PDFs and paper records. For those LA Counts offers a link to more information.
- Complete metadata | LA Counts records and lists metadata as provided by its publisher, whether it is complete or not. The Metadata Completion Rate indicates where it falls on the spectrum.
